Perfect Family Games for Halloween
Dip in a Bucket of Horror
Place a variety of items in a bucket. (peeled grape for an eye; can opener can be a medieval torture instrument; a witch’s finger can be a carrot). Encourage imagination and allow the family to take out an object and create or tell a scary story.
Food and Drink
Make a “horror brew”. Use an old bucket and encourage everyone to place all kinds of horrific items in it; plastic spiders, stones, spit, old tea bags, cabbage leaves can be used for bats’ wings, old tights ripped up for witches skin. Then go into the kitchen and close the door. Making awful noises, turn on the blender and make them think you are mixing an evil brew. Come out, acting frantic, with the witches brew. Actually it is juice colored with green food dye.
Ugly Monster Beauty Contest
The children get to face paint the adults. The worse it looks the better it is. Then the adults parade around in front of the children. The ugliest wins.
Mix and Match Pumpkin Patch Before the game, make several pumpkins and Jack O Lantern pieces. Place the pieces in a bag and have the players pick a piece out at a time to make their pumpkins.
Ghoulish Laugh Competition
Everyone takes a turn to act out a maniacal laugh. Add movements and facial expressions.
Take Turns Telling Horror Stories
Always a winner with children above 5 years old. Everyone sits in a circle in the dark. Have a few starter sentences already prepared in a witches hat or cauldron in the center, like: “A headless man entered the room…………..” or “There was a knock at the door just as the wind howled ……………..”. Each player picks out a sentence and while they shine a torch in their face, they begins the story and then pass the torch to the next in circle. Everyone ends in laughter as the story becomes more gruesome.
Skeleton Scavenger Hunt Make a skeleton or buy one. Cut into body parts and hide them around the house. have the guest “unearth” the pieces and put the skeleton together.
