I have been talking each month about how important it is to talk to your tween and teen about their period and what they need to know and how U by Kotex Tween can be such a huge resource.After talking about the basics with your tween/teen, the next step is talking about monthly maintenance.
Serenity and I have been discussing it in general at this point even though for her, it is still kind of an abstract point, since she isn’t there yet. It is important for girls to know the “warning signs” that their period is coming and how to prepare so that they do not have one of those sweatshirt around the waist moments while they are out at school or out with friends.
It is a good idea for girls to keep a calendar. It helps to know when to expect their period, even if they do not have any other signs. It is also god for girls to know the physical symptoms they might experience before their period starts too. Things like cramps, moodiness, and headache, to name a few. Besides knowing to notice them as a precursor to getting their period, it is a good idea for them to know how to handle them, if it causes any discomfort.
The other important details to be sure to discuss: hygiene. When to change a pad, what to do if one overflows, and how to prevent stains. All of these things can be very for any woman, and even more so for a young girl who is already unsure about this whole process or who has to deal with it in a public setting. Making sure she is ahead of the game and knows exactly how to handle is perfect.
